Panthers nab Marshall assistant

By Chris Dokish

Tom Herrion was an excellent assistant coach for Pitt before leaving to be the head coach of Marshall prior to this past season. Now Herrion keeps giving to the program as his right hand man at Marshall this season, Bill Barton, will be named shortly to Dixon's staff. According to a source close to the situation, "It's a done deal." It is expected to be announced officially on Monday.

Barton, who will be 51 in July, is a Boston native who coached for just one season at Marshall. Prior to that he spent three seasons under Ron Everhart at Duquesne. The Dukes were the first college position for Barton, who previously was the coach at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, MA, which just happens to be one of the most talent rich prep schools in the country. Players at Notre Dame that Barton coached include Michael Beasley, Carl Krauer, Ryan Gomes, Paul Harris, and Lazar Hayward. For the 2011 class, Notre Dame features top prospect Ricky Ledo, who the Panthers have recruited mildly over the past year, as well as Myles Davis, a sharpshooting guard that is the cousin of Brandin Knight, and who the Panthers have recruited for over a year.

What do you think of this hire Chris? I like that he used to be the coach at Notre Dame Prep and that he worked with Tom Herrion last season but do you think he's ready for the position and what does he bring in terms of recruiting?

He's been a college assistant for four years and he was at a prep school that was basically a college so I think he will make a fine Associate Head Coach. I know Tom Herrion is very high on him and people like Herrion, Dixon, and Everhart aren't going to hire some bum. I think he will have a strong presence in New England, and don't forget that one of the best recruiters in that area, Pat Skerry, is no longer in the picture because he's not going to bring that elite NE talent to Townson.

Plus, he's already in his early 50s and I think the chances of him getting his first big head coaching job at this stage of his life may be slim, so maybe he will give some stability for awhile.

Chris, do you have any insight into the Gibbs staying in the draft rumor. Is there some validity to it? or just a rumor spreading like wildfire?

I haven't heard anything in the last few days but about a week ago I was told that there was a good chance that he will not be back.

Is the Maryland opening an enticing one for Dixon? A lot of schools have made attempts at him but he has always decided to stay at Pitt. ACC, great recruiting base and I'm sure a lot of money could be the one.

It's considered a great job but I don't see it happening. But you never know what Dixon's thinking. For all we know, he could get offered twice as much money and thinks it's time for a change, but I wouldn't worry about it until, and if, we hear that's the case.

Well, Gary Parrish is reporting that they will meet with Sean Miller and that Dixon is uninterested. So there goes that.

Chris,
I read the article about Jaylen Bond and it mentioned he hasn't heard much from recruiters since his release from his LOI. I have a hard time believing Tom Herrion has not been all over him considering how high on him Herrion was when he initally committed, I personally think he won't ever play for Pitt and that much like DeAndre Kane Marshall would be an ideal landing spot for Jaylen. Do you think Jaylen will ever play for Pitt and if not where do you think he ends up?

Chris,

We have not heard from you for quite awhile. We now have Ashton Gibbs back, so that has some bi impact for the Panthers. We also have completed the Spring Football season with a new coach and a very new "high octane" system. Could you please share your thoughts on these issues and whatever else is on your mind? Maybe it is time for a "Nobody asked me but, ..." type of articles to get us up to speed on your smart insights?

Doke,

PLEASE TELL US YOUR PLANS FOR PUBLISHING IN THE FUTURE. WE KNOW THAT YOU ARE BUSY, BUT PLS TAKE A SECOND AND EXPLAIN TO US WHAT IS UP. WE ONLY ASK BECAUSE WE RESPeCT your THOUGHTS. EVEN IF YOU ARE DONE, THEN KNOWING THAT WOULD BE A HELP.

THANKS.
