November 19, 2007

It may have took longer than expected, but Pittsburgh Panthers head coach Jamie Dixon has finally put the finishing touches on his 2008 recruiting class by getting a verbal commitment from 6’8” 220 pound power forward Dwight Miller of St. Pius X HS in Houston, TX. A native of the Bahamas, Miller has trained with former NBA great Hakeem Olajuwon.

The Panthers staff struck out on top 20 target Eloy Vargas, who verbally committed to two time defending champion Florida, as well as top 50 prospect Kevin Jones, who chose West Virginia over the weekend. While Miller is not considered a top 100 prospect, he is a tenacious rebounder and defender, and also has the ability to make shots away from the basket. He is still very raw and has only been playing basketball for three years, but he is considered one of the fastest developing front court prospects in the country.

Others interested in Miller included St. John’s, Rutgers, Temple, Illinois, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. Miller, who is expected to be eligible, replaces 6’7 Darnell Dodson, who briefly practiced with the Panthers before being considered ineligible. There is a good chance that Dodson will return to the Panthers in 2009. Like all programs, the Panthers never stop recruiting, but as of now they are not expected to add any more prospects for the 2008 class.
